This year’s spring conference is the 30th international conference that is being held by Korea TESOL. It is also the 30th anniversary of KOTESOL as an organization (1993–2023). In recognition of this dual celebration, this panel will reflect back over the past 30 years to evaluate how well KOTESOL has served the ELT community as well as look forward to project what directions KOTESOL should take and what changes KOTESOL should make to best serve our ever-changing and increasingly rapidly changing ELT community. Our panelists consists of long-term KOTESOL members with distinguished leadership experience and institutional knowledge, including as national president and international conference chair.

  • Garth Elzerman

    Garth Elzerman joined KOTESOL when he first arrived in Korea, in 2019, and served as the 2019 International Conference HR Coordinator. For the 2021 International Conference, he assisted with coordinating the Zoom-room hosts. He was elected to the position of 2022 International Conference Co-chair and is now chairing the 2023 Korea TESOL International Conference. Garth moved to Korea in early 2019 from South Africa. He is now teaching at Kyungdong University in Sokcho, Gangwon-do. He has a master’s degree in philosophy from the University of South Africa, a postgraduate certificate in education from Essex University, a honours degree in philosophy from UNISA, a TESOL certificate from the Wits University, and a baccalaureate in philosophy, psychology, and law from Rhodes University. He will soon be undertaking his doctoral studies in moral emotions.

  • Kyungsook Yeum

    Kyungsook Yeum is the former director of SMU TESOL and faculty member of Sookmyung Women’s University, Seoul. Dr. Yeum’s understanding of the TESOL profession became more robust with her service on the TESOL Board of Directors, TESOL International Association, USA (2015–2018). She served as national president of Korea TESOL (2004–2005), as vice president of the Korea Association of Teachers of English (KATE) and the Applied Linguistics Association of Korea (ALAK) among other positions. She was the international conference chair for the KOTESOL-hosted Pan-Asia Conference (2014) and has also hosted KOTESOL’s international conference at Sookmyung for over 10 years as the onsite director. Dr. Yeum has been a member of KOTESOL for over 20 years.

  • Robert J. Dickey

    Rob Dickey has been teaching English in Korea since arriving in 1994 from his work with community-based NGOs in the multicultural communities of Southern California. His first KOTESOL conference was in 1995, and he has been involved as a member, staffer, and officer at chapter, SIG, and national levels ever since, including with conferences (international conference chair, 2008), publications, sponsorships, and as president (2001–2002). Rob is also engaged in various other teacher associations in Korea and globally; his teaching focus is in content-based instruction, particularly with the subjects of tourism, administration, and law.

  • Joo-Kyung Park

    Joo-Kyung Park is a professor of TESOL in the Department of English at Honam University, S. Korea. Since she joined KOTESOL in 1993, she has served KOTESOL as the first president of the Jeolla Chapter and the second vice-president, first vice-president, and then national president (1996–1997) of KOTESOL. She has also worked for the Korea TESOL Journal and the journal of the Pan-Asia Consortium. Dr. Park has been invited to KOTESOL national and international conferences as a featured, plenary, and panel/colloquium speaker. Currently, she serves as a co-president of the Asian Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (AsiaTEFL) and collaborates with KOTESOL for the development of both organizations, which she loves so dearly.

  • Allison Bill

    Allison Bill has been a proud member of KOTESOL since 2002. She has held many different positions at the chapter, conference, and national council level ever since, including International Conference Chair in 2006. She is currently president of the Jeonju-North Jeolla chapter, and chair of the International Outreach Committee. She teaches in the Department of English Language and Literature at Jeonju University.

  • Bryan Hale

    Bryan Hale served as president of Korea TESOL from 2021 to 2022. He is currently Gwangju-Jeonnam KOTESOL chapter president. He was first blown away by the 2012 international conference and has been involved with KOTESOL since. Bryan teaches at Jeonnam Foreign Language High School in Naju. In 2020, he completed a Master of Applied Linguistics (TESOL) through the University of New England in Australia, in which he researched language play and playfulness in the foreign language classroom.
